Class Placement & Structure

On the first day, every camper completes an opening ceremony and Mandarin placement test inside the Imperial Academy classrooms, and is placed into a class based on their Chinese level and age. Small classes of 3–5 students ensure every child receives personal attention, with full Mandarin immersion throughout and English support available for beginners.

Learning Focus by Level

Beginner: Learn pinyin, tones, basic sentence patterns, and everyday characters.
Elementary: Build practical vocabulary and communicate in simple daily situations.
Intermediate: Hold conversations, expand character knowledge, and improve fluency.
Advanced: Express complex ideas clearly; refine logic, structure, and dialogue.
Fluency: Discuss topics freely in Chinese, including comparisons between Chinese and other cultures.

Curriculum & Environment

All Chinese classes are held inside the Imperial Academy — a 600-year-old landmark where simply walking into the classroom is a journey through time. Topic-based learning, real-life tasks, and nightly 1-on-1 tutoring sessions make language progress visible and lasting. Classes are divided by age — Kids (8–11) and Teens (12–17).

Beijing Campus

Two Historic Sites. One Extraordinary Camp. Fully enclosed. Fully safe.

Cathay Camps' Beijing campus is set within two rare historic landmarks — both fully enclosed with controlled access, so parents feel at ease and campers can immerse themselves completely.

The Imperial Academy (国子监) — 700 Years of China's Highest Learning

Founded in 1287, the Imperial Academy was China's most prestigious seat of learning for over 600 years — where the empire's brightest scholars studied and emperors came to teach in person. Its buildings have stood for over 700 years and remain the only fully preserved ancient imperial academy in existence. This isn't just a place to visit — it's also our classroom.

At Cathay Camps, Chinese history isn't something you read about in a textbook. It's what you walk into every morning.

FAQ

We recommend applying 3 to 6 months before your chosen session. Spots for the multi-city full boarding programs fill up early, and applying ahead gives you more flexibility on dates and enough time for visa processing and travel preparation.
All our Chinese language teachers are native Mandarin speakers, certified in international Chinese language teaching, and experienced working with overseas youth. Classes are kept small — 3 to 5 students — so every child receives personal attention. Bilingual counselors are with the campers throughout the entire program.
Absolutely. We welcome campers of all levels, from complete beginners to fluent speakers. On the first day, every child completes a placement test to ensure they're placed in the right class. Beginners start with pinyin, tones, and basic conversation — our teachers are experienced at making those first steps feel natural and enjoyable.
Mornings are for Mandarin classes in the historic classrooms of the Imperial Academy or the Temple of Agriculture. Afternoons are for cultural activities and city exploration — hutong visits, kung fu, calligraphy, AI company tours, and more. For full boarding campers, evenings include 1-on-1 Chinese tutoring, homework time, and team activities. Every day is different, and every day is full.
China currently offers visa-free entry to citizens of over 60 countries, covering much of Europe, Southeast Asia, North America, and beyond — so many families won't need a visa at all. If your country isn't yet on the visa-free list, a tourist visa (L visa) is straightforward to apply for. We provide an official camp invitation letter and a detailed application guide. We recommend starting the process at least 2 months before departure, and our team is happy to assist with any questions.
First-aid qualified staff are on site at all times. For anything more serious, we work with trusted local medical facilities and will contact you immediately to keep you informed at every step. Your child's health is always our first priority.
When you register, we ask you to complete a detailed health form covering all allergies — food, environmental, or medical. Before camp begins, we share this information with our catering team, medical staff, and counselors, so everyone working with your child is fully informed and prepared. For food allergies, we coordinate with the campus kitchen to ensure safe meal options. If your child carries emergency medication, please bring a sufficient supply and let us know in advance so our team can respond quickly if needed. No allergy concern is too small to mention.
No — travel insurance for the duration of the camp program within China is already included in your fees, covering all campers throughout the program. If your child plans to continue travelling in China before or after camp, we recommend purchasing additional coverage for those days independently.
Our Beijing campus sites — the Imperial Academy and the Temple of Agriculture — both operate under enclosed, managed access with controlled entry and exit. Accommodation in Beijing and other cities is in four-star hotels. Full boarding campers have 24/7 counselor supervision, boys and girls are housed separately, and staff conduct regular check-ins. All off-campus outings are led by our team, and full emergency protocols are in place.
We send parents daily updates — photos, activity highlights, and notes on how your child is settling in. You will have direct contact details for your child's camp leader and can reach us at any time. We know entrusting your child to us takes real trust, and we take that seriously.
Yes. Our staff will be waiting at the arrivals hall with a clearly marked camp sign and will escort your child safely to the camp. Once they have arrived and settled in, we will send you a confirmation straight away. From the moment your child lands, they are in our care.
Our standard programs are designed for campers aged 8–17 to attend independently — stepping away from family, forming new friendships, and navigating an unfamiliar environment are all core parts of the experience. That said, if you have specific concerns, please reach out and we'll discuss what works best for your family. We also offer customised family and parent-child group programs — contact us to find out more.
